«Grand pendu, j’iray taster de ton vin en passant» Votre meylleur mestre et affectionné amy ; signé «Henry». This is how the french King Henry the IVth invited himself to taste the good wine made by his friend Montesquiou, asking him to meet him for the battle of Coutras !
If Armagnac has been made in Gascony since the XVth century, documents from the Xth century leads to the Montesquiou family in the same region.
While the eldest of the Montesquiou family were staying in Armagnac to run their vineyards, the youngest were going to Paris tempting their luck at the King’s service. Their memories remained in French History, such as the famous Monluc from Religious Wars, or General de Montesquiou-Fezensac who made the Russian Campaign with Napoleon, and of course, the legendary d’Artagnan from the three musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, and many more…
In 1990, Jean-Louis and Claire de Montesquiou acquired the «Domaine d’Espérance», a vineyard of Bas-Armagnac in Gascony. Claire de Montesquiou is now happy to show her production to you.
